Selecting a Contractor

While price is a factor, it should not be the deciding factor. There is always a trade-off between price and quality. It is very important to know what standards you are buying, what you are receiving in terms of materials and workmanship, as well as the assurance of knowing the service extends after the work is completed.

Asphalt Shingles are the most common roofing material used by homeowners in North America. There are two types of asphalt shingles; organic and fibre-glass, named after their base materials. The average life span of asphalt shingles can range from 10 to 50 years depending on the quality of materials and installation methods used.

3-Tab Shingles
have been the standard in roofing for     many years. It is the most economical of roofing products. Not recommended for high wind areas unless installed during summer months, allowing proper adherence. 3-Tab shingles also come as a 20, 25, and 30 year product.

Architectural Shingles have a look that is unmistakable. Because your roof is one of the first things people notice, it makes sense to invest in one of the finest products available. Architectural shingles come as a 25, 30, or 40 year product. It is clearly one of the best selling and finest looking shingles on the market.

Drip Edge is a strip of metal used on the edge of the roof that allows water to flow into the eaves trough. Drip edge prevents the edge of the first roof board and fascia from rotting. It prevents the shingles from bending into the eaves trough at the edge of the roof.

Dormers are structures that project outwards from the roof, usually holding a window.

Flashing is material used to weatherproof and protect joins in a roof slope. Flashing is usually metal and/or a waterproof membrane.

Gables are triangular structures usually on the ends of a house or dormer.

Ice dams are the formation of ice usually on the edge of a roof. Ice dams are caused when melting snow runs down the roof and freezes at the edge, creating a build up of ice.

Rafters are a structural part of the roof that supports the roof boards or plywood. In the human body the rafters are similar to the skeleton and the plywood like the skin.

Rubber Roofing is recommended only for flat and low-pitched roofs. It consists of an asphalt-saturated, granule-covered roofing felt that is laid over the roof deck. It can only provide single- or two-ply coverage and needs to be inspected for cracking, blistering, surface erosion, and torn sections regularly.  Also check for signs of water ponding and poor drainage.

Soffit is the finished overhang on the outside of the house. It protects the walls of the house from rain and snow. Also, if the eaves trough overflows, the overhang provides a buffer to prevent leaks into the house.

Underlay is a rolled material that is used to cover the roof surface before the shingles are applied. There are two type of underlay waterproof and water resistant.

Waterproof underlay is designed to prevent leaks in problem areas such as around dormers, chimneys and high water concentration areas. Waterproof underlay also helps prevent ice damming leaks.

Water resistant underlay is used as additional insurance against leaks caused by driving rain, shingle blow off and torrential down pours. Water resistant underlay can help prevent a disaster should an unexpected rainstorm occur during the installation of the roof.

Valleys are where two roof slopes meet usually forming an inside corner.

Ventilation is the flow of air in the attic. Constant circulation of air in the attic prevents heat and moisture build up, two factors affecting shingle life. Intake and exhaust ventilation are required.

Wood Shingles and Shakes are commonly made from cedar, redwood and southern pine. Wood shingles are machine-sawn creating a smooth surface. Wood shakes are hand-hewn giving them a rough appearance.
